On August 8, 2025, Baylor University filed a claim against Boston University for trademark infringement. This case is rather narrow, as it is about a very particular trademark claim. Baylor University has an interlocking letter design that they have been using for a long time, and Baylor says Boston University has also used this same design, causing confusion in the marketplace.
One of the bigger revelations is that there is a coexistence agreement between Baylor and Boston University, that says that both schools can use the initials “BU”, but the interlocking BU logo that Baylor uses was never part of that agreement.
“Defendant has primarily used the initials “BU” side by side on a horizontal plane for many years. Baylor does not object to such a side-by-side stylization, understanding it to be consistent with the Agreement. The Agreement reflects the parties’ agreement to coexist with the initials “BU” and created no right of use of an identical interlocking BU stylized mark for Defendant.”
The design in question:

Baylor University has registered this interlocking design logo in multiple products.

Boston University has used its “BU” side by side.

But Boston University also has an interlocking version.
